Český Krumlov castle courtyards are freely accessible and illustrate the gradual transformation of a fortified castle on the beautiful castle grounds. The second courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle is originaly space of the Lower Castle. Second courtyard was functioned as a fortification between the Lower and Upper Castle in Middle Ages so it was not a bilt up area in the past. Part of the fortifications was deep moat that made diffucult to capture access to third courtyard of the Upper Castle. Access was ensured by stair tower in Gothic Period, then from 1575 by wooden drawbridge. Only in 1647 was a deep moat spanned by a stone bridge. Appearance of the second courtyard of Český Krumlov Castle began to be modified to its present form sometime after 1640. The fountain located in second courtyard is dated in the same period. Tourists can climb the castle tower from second courtyard that is the symbol of the castle and symbol of the Český Krumlov town. There is also located castle museum on second courtyard.
